How to Teach: Creative Writing
Curriculum Creator Seminar - 1 Hour of PD
Creative writing can be intimidating to teach and disengaging for students who don’t “get it”. This area of study lends students who read an innate advantage, and students who don’t read proficiently can feel disadvantaged in a way they cannot describe. Creative writing, however, doesn’t have to enforce this ephemeral divide. Learning should be accessible for all students and the soft skills necessary to succeed in this curriculum area is a strength.
Spark the imagination of your students, get them excited and invested in the finished product they are working towards, and use the drafting process as an opportunity to support the problem-solving capacities of your authors.
This PD seminar will cover the following:
-
Tasks to improve the writerly quality of students’ stories
-
How to get students inspired to create their own narratives
-
How to structure creative writing
-
How to teach a creative writing unit that is authentic, engaging, accessible for all students
